How does CKC support the development of Women and Girl’s Cricket? https://demo.ckc.london/how-does-ckc-support-the-development-of-women-and-girls-cricket/ Fri, 20 Oct 2023 15:13:25 +0000 https://demo.ckc.london/?p=19240

Supporting the continued development of women and girl’s cricket is a core aim of Capital Kids Cricket. Throughout all our projects we are proud to highlight, promote, and grow the women’s game.

Clubs

Every club that we set up, develop, or support has the aim of setting up or growing a women and girl’s section.

At two of our flagship clubs, Leyton Wicketz CC and West Ham and Stratford CC, we are well on our way to achieving this and aim to have at least one team from each club playing junior league cricket by summer 2024.

In year one of our Clubs in Need Project we will be supporting the growth of Canons CC, a girl’s only cricket club based in North London.

We will be containing to support the growth and development of a women and girl’s section at London Tigers CC, Regent’s Park CC, and Tower Hamlets CC.

Women’s University Cricket

Delivered in partnership with the Surrey Cricket Foundation, we have been running cricket sessions for women’s university clubs in London since 2016. Having initially started with Kings College London’s Women’s Cricket Club, the project has grown significantly.

In addition to KCL, sessions are now run for University College London, Imperial College London, and the London School of Economics, an annual indoor league between all the teams takes place, and, this year, over 100 women have already taken part in coaching sessions.

Competitions

While training and honing your skills is important, playing matches and putting everything into practice is the best bit!

That is why we run our competitions and nothing highlights that better than our flagship competition – the William Greaves Trophy.

Contested by over 200 primary schools each year, the William Greaves Trophy features teams of 8 players where a minimum of 4 players per team must be girls.
Over the last 2 cricket seasons we have been working with the Victoria Park Community Cricket League in East London to develop a women’s midweek cricket league – the Gina Bogun League.

In 2023, 4 teams took part in regular matches and we aim to grow this with the league even further in 2024 and beyond!

Our annual six-a-side competition, the London Sixes has always featured both and men’s and women’s competition.

Going forward, the competition will only feature a women’s competition to provide a greater focus on the women’s game and help to promote it further.

Over the next 6 months we will be launching two brand-new, female only, leagues.

These will be the My Game League, targeting secondary school girls with a combination of training sessions and matches against other schools, and a new indoor, midweek, league for mixed ability club sides.

Trips and Residentials

Each year we take groups of girls on day and residential trips to various locations across the UK, including the Wormsley Cricket Ground in Buckinghamshire and our annual trips to Arundel. Run in partnership with the Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation, these trips provide opportunities for 96 girls from inner city London every year!

Refugee Cricket

It is not only in the UK that we support the development of women and girl’s cricket.

We have worked with the Alsama Project in Lebanon since 2017 to develop cricket at refugee camps across Lebanon and a big part of this has been to provide equal opportunities for both male and female participants to take part, learn about the game, and develop as young people and adults.

Cricket transcends sport, and cricket clubs are its heart, especially in inner cities, where support is essential to keep the game thriving and to attract more young enthusiasts. This was the central theme of yesterday’s launch of the “Clubs in Need” initiative by former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain OBE, who also serves as the President of Capital Kids Cricket (CKC). The groundbreaking “Clubs in Need” initiative was introduced at the Leyton County Cricket Ground, followed by an evening event where Nasser Hussain engaged with invited guests, discussing “Clubs in Need” and the incredible summer of cricket. This transformative programme aims to rejuvenate struggling cricket clubs while bridging the gap in transitioning young cricketers from soft ball to hard ball cricket, addressing critical community challenges.

CKC STATEMENT: ICEC REPORT ON EQUITY IN CRICKET https://demo.ckc.london/ckc-statement-icec-report/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 12:00:49 +0000 https://demo.ckc.london/?p=18613

MEDIA ALERT:  SPOKESPEOPLE AVAILABLE TO COMMENT ON EQUITY CRICKET REPORT

REQUEST FOR COMMENT: 07748114811 (CEO) or 07980837502 (Founder trustee, Haydn Turner)

Capital Kids Cricket has been fighting against discrimination for the past 34 years. A charity which was set up to overcome societal challenges and empower young people, today responds to findings from the ICEC report that finds structural racism, sexism, and elitism in English and Welsh cricket.

Capital Kids Cricket welcomes the ICEC report published today and will be taking its recommendations into account for both our current and future projects. As championed by the launch of our Bowl Out Racism campaign, we are committed to eradicating all forms of discrimination from our game, and wider society. As we have done since 1989, we will continue to work to ensure that cricket is a game for everyone.

We are proud to deliver projects that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion, but we are aware more can be done. We look forward to working with the entire cricket community to support the England and Wales cricket board’s delivery of a cricket ‘reset’ going forward.

“Our work in London over the last 34 years has shown us that with the right focus, funding, and commitment we can meet the goal of making cricket the most equitable sport.  Watched by millions, cricket has the potential to not only encourage sport and fitness but team spirit and a sense of community – we can see that at the grassroots in the programmes we operate successfully in 20London boroughs.,” says Nasser Hussain OBE, President of CKC.

“We are saddened but not surprised by today’s findings from the ICEC. Cricket should be a game for all.  The great work from the England men’s and women’s teams to make it an entertaining sport to watch, needs to be matched by systemic work from all institutions to truly make it a sport for everyone, regardless of race, gender, or social status. We saw in our World Cricket Festival attended by 58 Nationalist and 64 language speakers.” says Shahidul Alam Ratan, CEO of CKC.

“I am proud to see that Capital Kids Cricket has already been implementing and following all relevant recommendations from the ICEC report and this gives us further confidence in the work we are delivering. We have fought discrimination for 34 years, organised cricket in hundreds of London’s diverse communities and encouraged boys and girls from all backgrounds to play cricket.” Says Haydn Turner, founder trustee of CKC, MCC Member.

CKC is a youth development charity that improves the social, emotional, and physical development of children, young people, and families across London. We are one of the most diverse cricket organisations in the UK running a wide range of projects across London and the southeast including:

Offering programmes in 113 locations across 20 London boroughs for over 8,000 children per year.

We work with over 2,500 women and girls per year.

Running sports lessons for children in 6 London hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital School.

Supporting 12 refugee camps in Lebanon, working with displaced boys and girls

2023 will see the launch of our Clubs in Need Programme providing bespoke support to cricket clubs who are facing various challenges due to a lack of outreach, coaching, volunteers, and parental support.

ABOUT CKC

CKC was setup in 1989 by Haydn Turner and Bill Greaves, two accomplished businessmen, friends and passionate life-long cricket supporters.  Both wanted to address the lack of cricket on offer in London and regenerate cricket in schools.

By 1991, CKC had gained momentum and joined forces with other initiatives focused on establishing cricket in schools including the London Schools’ Cricket Association (LCCA) and the London Schools Cricket Project (LSCP) and in partnership they were operating across 19 London boroughs.

This mission has remained the same since 1989, although the charity has evolved and alongside its work in schools across London, it handles initiatives in hospitals and is now actively involved with refugees here in the UK and in Lebanon.  CKC has remained true to its goal and has sought to use cricket to unify people regardless of their differences – both socially and culturally– and bring communities together.

Latchmere Crowned Champions!

The 15th edition of the UK’s
largest indoor primary school cricket competition, the William Greaves Trophy,
came to a thrilling end yesterday as Latchmere Primary stormed to victory at
the Home of Cricket, Lord’s.

Having
lost the toss and been put into bat by fellow first time finalists, Rokesly
Primary (Haringey), Latchmere got off to a steady start, despite losing an
early wicket (Amber, run out for 6), with Ethan retiring on 15 and leading the
team to a competitive total that left Rokesly needing 70 to win.

While
a very getable score, a brilliant all round bowling performance from Latchmere
made run scoring very difficult for the Rokesly batters and in the end it
proved too much as the team from the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
claimed their first ever William Greaves Trophy title.

Congratulations
Latchmere and thank you to all the schools who took part this year!

We have been working hard to establish women and girl’s sections at each of our clubs and by 2025 we aim to have set up and/or developed women and girl’s sections across at least 5 clubs in London.

West Ham and Stratford CC is one such club and in the film below, Kaavya, Krisha and their mothers, tell us what it is like to be a part of the club and the impact cricket has had on them.
